Charcuterie Board 101

A charcuterie board, otherwise known as a meat and cheese board, is a great way to display a grand assortment of meats, cheeses, and finger foods while creating a conversation piece among guests.

Before you can create your work of art, you have to do some planning. First, you need to figure out what you are going to display your spread on. It could be a wood, marble, or granite board. Whatever suits your fancy! The larger the board, the more items you will need to fill up the space. I chose a maple cutting board that my father-in-law made by hand in his wood shop. It was a Christmas gift to my husband and I, which made it even more special.

Next, pick your items based on varying tastes and textures. Once you have picked your items, then decide how you are going to arrange your board. The rule of thumb is to plate meats and cheeses first, and then fill in the gaps with the other compliments.

Charcuterie Board Pairings:

2-3 cured meats such as prosciutto, soppressata, chorizo, or salami

2-3 varying cheeses, typically a hard and soft cheese

Pickles, cornichons, or olives

Mixed Nuts

Any seasonal fruit will work. I like red grapes and dried apricots because they won’t perish quickly once plated.

Fruit spread or jam

Basic cracker such as a water cracker or salted crisp
