Summertime is almost here, which means many of us like to get outside and exercise. However, with temperatures on the rise, it’s important to know how to stay cool and safe when exercising outdoors.
I don’t particularly enjoy exercising outside in the summer heat, especially when the humidity is high. I’d rather workout indoors in the air conditioning where it’s cooler and comfortable. But if you’re one of those people who enjoys working out in the hot hot heat, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Hydrate – One of the most important things to remember is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Your body is sweating out most of your fluids and when it’s really hot outside, you’re sweating even more. Make sure to bring water with you on your workout and if it’s more than an hour workout, consider hydrating with sports drinks since they contain electrolytes and potassium.
Wear Sunscreen – It’s recommended that you wear sunscreen all year around and not just in the summer, so it’s a no brainer to make sure to lather on the sunscreen if you will be working out in the heat of the summer. Wear Light Clothing – Comfort is key when exercising in the heat, so be sure to wear light clothing that is brightly colored so that you’re visible to traffic. My favorite clothing material to wear in the heat is material that is moisture wicking, which will help keep the sweat under control.
Timing – Usually the hottest part of the day in the summertime is between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., so it might be a good idea to schedule your workout before or after those times when it’s a little cooler.
Listen To Your Body – You know your body best, so make sure you listen to it. If you’re struggling in the heat, stop and hydrate and then consider working out indoors where it’s cooler or take a break and skip the workout. Whatever the situation is, remember that working out in hot temperatures puts more stress on our body, so if you can’t handle it, make sure to know your limits and be safe.
