Do you struggle with your fitness routine when traveling? Traveling can be exhausting, especially when it’s for business and sometimes you just don’t have the energy to even think about a workout. Over the years of traveling, I have found that if I just do even a quick 10-20 minute workout, I feel so much better and ready to take on the day. If you’re an avid traveler and are looking for ways to incorporate fitness into your travel itinerary, here are a few tips to keep in mind.
Sleep – First and foremost, try to get enough sleep. I know this can be hard when you’re out of your routine and in a new place, but try your best to get at least 6 hours of sleep (8 hours is ideal) at nighttime. Obviously, if you’re not getting enough sleep, you won’t feel like doing much of anything, let alone workout.
Hydrate – Make sure you are drinking enough water when you’re traveling. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, which can make you feel sluggish and tired. Try to keep water with you at all times and sip on it throughout the day.
Going to the Gym– If the place you’re staying has a gym, try to utilize it. I enjoy checking out a good hotel gym to see what kind of new machines they have and it’s a nice change from my normal workout routine.
Workout Videos – In today’s world, it’s so easy to find a variety of workout videos on Youtube and fitness apps. If you don’t have access to the gym or would rather not go to a gym, you can do a workout video right from the comfort of your room. Also, If you don’t want to do a workout video or don’t have access, you can always do some of your own exercises such as planks, situps, lunges, yoga, and the list goes on and on.
Exercising in a New Location – If you’re like me and like to get outside and explore a new destination, this is a perfect time to fit in a workout, while getting to check out some cool sites. Plus, your workout seems to go much quicker when you’re in a new destination and who doesn’t love that!
Swimming – Swimming is another fantastic workout and it’s low impact. If your place that you are staying at has a pool, this is another way to get your fitness in.
Excursions/Adventures – If you’re on a trip that is very adventurous and you’re doing a lot of hiking, biking, walking, excursions, etc. then this is another way to get your fitness in.
Meetings – If you’re meeting with someone and it’s within a reasonable distance, consider walking to that destination instead of driving or taking mass transportation.
Healthy Snacks & Meals – I know this is a hard one to do, especially when you’re traveling, but when you can, try to opt for healthier snacks and meals. Indulge when necessary, especially since this is vacation! Perhaps, you eat healthier during the day, but have an indulgent meal at night. It’s all about balance, right?
